The roundtable aims to convene government and other relevant stakeholders (e.g. central bank officials), to explore pathways for IMF reforms aligned with aspirations for a climate-resilient future.

ERF acknowledges the financial support from IDRC and the partnership with the AERC and PEP.
Sub-Saharan African countries face increasing debt distress and vulnerability, with annual debt servicing costs accounting for 80% of climate finance needs. Multilateral cooperation is needed to focus on debt sustainability and climate goals. The Vulnerable Group of 20 and other developing countries have launched the Emergency Coalition for Debt Sustainability and Climate Prosperity, which will launch at the 2023 IMF/WB Group Annual Meetings. An African Climate Summit side event will discuss climate and development-centered frameworks for debt restructuring.
The AERC with support from BMFG, is implementing a collaborative research project on “Evidence to drive reforms for Special Drawing Rights (SDR) financing in SSA economic recovery” focusing on countries that have high potential to use SDR allocations for development but currently face serious debt issues. The project focuses on the in-depth analysis of specific SDR financing issues in Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal and Kenya with the objective to increase evidence and awareness about the role of SDRs as well as produce policy recommendations that are responsive to the specific needs and policy priorities of the four countries and that influence the policymaking process in those countries. Four papers from the following Think Tanks will be presented during the session.
AERC, with funding from NORAD is implementing the country case studies phase of “Re-examining the Growth, Poverty, Inequality and Redistribution Relationships in Africa (GPIR project)’’ that covers 7 African countries: Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Cameroon, Malawi, Togo, and Nigeria. The researchers in the project have completed their papers and are expected to disseminate their findings in a national dissemination workshop.
The paper to be disseminated in Ghana is titled “Examining poverty dynamics in Ghana: evidence from longitudinal and repeated cross-sectional data” by Dede W. Gafa, Bernardin Senadza, and Louis Hodey.
The University of Ghana – Economics Department will convene the workshop on behalf of AERC on 2 August 2023 from 9.00 am at the CEDI Conference Center at the University of Ghana in Accra.
The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) and the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET) will be co-hosting a Think Tank knowledge sharing session on 24 July 2023 at the Africa Human Capital Heads of States Summit in in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC). This summit, hosted by the Government of Tanzania, will focus on accelerating Africa’s economic growth through addressing learning poverty and skill gaps.

The PlenarySession will bring together world-class development economists and experts on African economies to offer fresh insights and perspectives as well as define new frontiers of research that respond to the pressing needs of policymakers.

The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) will host the twenty fifth series of the Senior Policy Seminar (SPS XXV) on 29-30, March 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya with a broad theme Human Capital Development in Africa. Four papers will be presented followed by a policy roundtable. The roundtable will be a mix of policy makers, paper presenters, non-state, and private sector actors.
AERC senior policy seminars are forums designed specifically to bring together senior policymakers from Africa to exchange experiences and deliberate on topical issues pertaining to sustainable development of their economies. The exchange involves an intense two-day dialogue among senior policy makers, intellectual leaders, private sector actors, and civil society based on policy-oriented research conducted by AERC network members. The ultimate goal is to promote policy based on rigor and evidence.
AERC will host a high panel discussion for Adam Smith’s Tercentenary on the side-lines of the AFES 2023 in Nairobi.
