THE AERC 2020–2025 STRATEGIC PLAN

                 The 2020–2025 Strategic Plan

               The 2020–2025 Strategic Plan maps out a new approach to capacity building that
               takes a broader perspective. A fundamental change to the way AERC operates, the new
               approach moves from an objectives-based to a theme-based approach, focusing on
               outcomes and impact measurement. The plan also presents new ways to engage across
               the region through incubator projects for funders to consider throughout the five-year
               planning period.

               It is imperative that the AERC changes the way it delivers along the research-to-policy
               value chain. AERC should adopt new approaches to enhance its relevance; build upon
               the unique convening power of the organization; and scale-up its services to support
               policymakers in their efforts to build a stronger economic foundation and future,
               nationally and regionally. By becoming their partner and encouraging other interested
               institutions and organizations to join with it, AERC will expand economic capacity across
               the region and promote positive development outcomes in SSA economies.

                 Strategic Alignment with

                 International and Regional

                 Development Goals

               The AERC 2020–2025 Strategic Plan has been grounded in and motivated by SDG  8 –
               which aims to ‘promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and
               productive employment, and decent work for all’ – and visionary ideals emerging at both
               national and continental level and embodied in the Africa 2063 Vision’s transformational
               outcomes for ‘improvements in living standards’ and ‘transformed, inclusive and
               sustainable economies’, most notably addressing the following Agenda 2063 Goals:

               4.    Transformed economies;

               5.    Modern agriculture for increased productivity and production;
               7.    Environmentally sustainable and climate-resilient economies and communities;

               9. Continental financial and monetary institutions that are established and
                     functional; and

               12. Capable institutions and transformative leadership.
