THE AERC 2020–2025 STRATEGIC PLAN

                 Regional and Global Influence

The evolution of AERC from a training programme to a scaled-up capacity-building and
policy-influencing network has resulted in significant influence across the continent
through increased capability and retention in universities; improved capacity in central
banks and ministries of finance; and through large-scale research projects that changed
the narrative on Africa and African economies. The growth of the economics discipline at
African universities has been impressive in terms of the number of faculty members with
doctoral degrees and in the number of research projects undertaken. Many economists
who participated in AERC’s research and training programmes are now in prominent
leadership positions, impacting policy and economic reform across the region. The
main areas of influence by alumni of AERC are policymaking at the national level within
critical ministries such as finance and economic planning; macroeconomic policy
and management at the level of central banks; at the regional, and international level
through policy influence in development and research institutions; and at the level of
civil society through research and policy dialogue in regional and national think tanks
               and policy institutes.
