Currently, 26 public universities in 21 sub-Saharan African countries participate in CMAP. Participating universities are classified into three categories, category A, category B and category C. Students in category A universities enroll for MA studies in either category B or category C universities. Category B comprises seven universities that are deemed to have adequate capacity to offer core courses (Macroeconomics, Microeconomics and Quantitative Methods) and supervise theses. Students in category B universities are jointly offered elective courses at the Joint Facility for Electives (JFE) for a period of three months (between July and September), taught by African scholars and leading international experts.
Category C comprises four universities that have built capacity to offer a menu of core and elective courses as well as supervise theses. The main difference between category B and category C universities is that the latter independently teach the elective courses. However, with the introduction of virtual delivery of JFE, category C universities have the option of enrolling their students for JFE.
