Southern Voice, African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), and Institute of Development Studies – Sussex (IDS) Win British Academy Grant to Strengthen Global Research Resilience
July 15, 2025African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), consortium of Southern Voice (SV), and Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex, is proud to announce a new project funded by the British Academy‘s Evidence-Informed Policymaking Programme.
Our winner research initiative, “Strengthening Resilience of Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) Research Institutions in the Global Evidence Ecosystem,” will analyse how to enhance the capacity and sustainability of LMIC research institutions within global knowledge systems.
It will explore closing the evidence-action gap and improving equity in the research-for-development field. This is achieved by enhancing the institutional capacity of think tanks, generating, and utilizing evidence, and influencing policymaking. Our target countries include Kenya, Indonesia, Brazil, South Africa, Senegal, and Bangladesh.
Led by principal investigator Dr. Rose Ngugi (Southern Voice Chair and former Executive Director at KIPPRA), with co-principal investigator Margarita Gómez (Executive Director, Southern Voice ), and co-investigators Peter Taylor (Director, Institute of Development Studies ), and Abbi Kedir (Director of Research, AERC ), the project is among the select few supported by the United Kingdom’s International Science Partnerships Fund (ISPF).
The programme aims to advance the use of quality evidence in policymaking, particularly across Official Development Assistance (ODA)-eligible countries. It encourages cross-regional collaboration to foster more equitable, impactful research partnerships and evidence use. This award marks a significant milestone in Southern Voice’s ongoing efforts to elevate research from the Global South and to inform more inclusive global development policies.
